A 10-yard dumpster holds about 81 sq ft of 4-inch slab inside its 2 included tons. A 15-yard holds about 101 sq ft inside 2.5 tons. Both are loaded only halfway up the walls. One cubic yard of concrete covers 81 sq ft at 4 inches thick.
| Size | Included weight | 4-inch slab | 6-inch slab | Halfway fill line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 2 tons (4,000 lb) | about 81 sq ft | about 54 sq ft | about 5 cubic yards |
| 15-yard | 2.5 tons (5,000 lb) | about 101 sq ft | about 68 sq ft | about 7.5 cubic yards |
To size your own slab, multiply length × width for the square feet. Divide by 81 for a 4-inch slab, or by 54 for a 6-inch slab. That gives cubic yards of solid concrete.
How much do concrete, dirt and rock weigh in a dumpster?
Broken concrete weighs about 860 lb per loose cubic yard, by EPA conversion factors. Dirt and sand weigh about 929 lb, rock and gravel about 999, and asphalt paving about 773. Half of a 10-yard dumpster, about 5 cubic yards, already weighs more than 2 tons of most of these.
| Material | Lb per cubic yard | Half of a 10-yard (5 cu yd) | Over 4,000 lb | Overage at $75/ton |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt paving | 773 | 3,865 lb | none | $0 |
| Broken concrete | 860 | 4,300 lb | 300 lb | $11.25 |
| Dirt and sand | 929 | 4,645 lb | 645 lb | $24.19 |
| Rock and gravel | 999 | 4,995 lb | 995 lb | $37.31 |
Worked example: half of a 10-yard is 5 cubic yards of broken concrete. 5 × 860 lb = 4,300 lb. That is 300 lb over the 4,000 lb included, or 0.15 tons. 0.15 × $75 = $11.25, billed by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket and never rounded up.
In a 15-yard, half is 7.5 cubic yards of broken concrete, or 6,450 lb. That runs 1,450 lb over 5,000, or $54.38. See how dumpster weight is billed for the full method.

Which size do I need for a patio or sidewalk removal?
A 10 by 10 ft patio at 4 inches thick fits a 15-yard dumpster with no overage. The slab is about 1.23 cubic yards of solid concrete, or about 4,940 lb, under the 15-yard's 5,000 lb. Broken up, it fills about 5.7 cubic yards, below the 15-yard's halfway line.
- Sidewalk, 4 × 20 ft at 4 in. 80 sq ft is about 0.99 cubic yards, or about 3,950 lb. It fits a 10-yard inside 2 tons.
- Patio, 10 × 10 ft at 4 in. 100 sq ft is about 4,940 lb. In a 10-yard it would run 940 lb over ($35.25) and above the halfway line, so book the 15-yard.
- Patio, 12 × 16 ft at 4 in. 192 sq ft is about 2.37 cubic yards, or about 9,480 lb. Plan two 15-yard loads of about 4,740 lb each, with a swap between them.
The 4,000 lb per solid cubic yard figure is typical, not exact. Thick edges, footings and rebar add weight, so leave some room.
Why can heavy debris only fill half the dumpster?
Heavy debris fills only halfway up the walls of a 10 or 15-yard dumpster because of highway weight limits. A full dumpster of concrete or dirt would be too heavy for the roll-off truck to carry legally. If a load is over the line, the $125 trip fee applies and the excess must come out.
Debris must also stay level with the top rim on every load. An overloaded dumpster can't be hauled under Texas law.
Where should a concrete dumpster sit?
A heavy-debris dumpster needs firm, level ground: a driveway, a paved pad or packed caliche. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails on concrete and asphalt. Keep the dumpster off soft lawn, fresh fill, septic lids and sprinkler heads, because a loaded dumpster presses down hard.
The driveway placement guide covers the space the truck needs.
How do you load concrete and dirt to stay under the line?
Load concrete and dirt evenly across the whole floor of the dumpster, and stop at the halfway mark on the walls. An even, flat load is safer to lift and easier to judge. A pile in one corner can reach the fill line while the rest of the floor sits empty.
- Lay broken slab pieces flat, largest pieces first, then fill gaps with smaller chunks.
- Wheel dirt in and rake it level instead of dumping it all at the door end.
- Cover the load if rain is coming. Wet dirt weighs more on the scale.
- Keep trash, wood and roots out so the load stays clean.

What if the job has more concrete or dirt than one load?
A bigger heavy-debris job gets a swap: we haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, billed as a new rental. Each load gets its own 7 days, included tons and scale ticket. Book by 3 PM for a next-day swap, so the crew isn't waiting on the next dumpster.
Keep each load clean to keep clean-fill pricing. Pile dirt on one load and concrete on the next, not both in one. If a load sits past 7 days, each extra day is $25.
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries never go in. See what you can put in a dumpster and the full fee list on the dumpster rental cost page.
Concrete dumpster rental questions
Why can't I get a 30-yard dumpster for my concrete?
A 30-yard dumpster full of broken concrete would weigh about 25,800 lb at 860 lb per cubic yard. That is far past what the truck can legally carry on the highway. The 10 and 15-yard sizes, loaded halfway, keep heavy loads inside the weight limit.
Does rebar or wire mesh in the concrete change anything?
Broken concrete weighs about 860 lb per cubic yard by EPA conversion factors, with or without rebar. Cut long rebar ends so pieces lie flat and stay below the fill line. Ask whether rebar affects clean-fill pricing for your load when you call.
Can I mix dirt and concrete in one dumpster?
Dirt and concrete can share a dumpster, but the mixed load no longer counts as clean and loses clean-fill pricing. Keep the same halfway fill line either way. If the job has a lot of both, two separate clean loads can cost less than one mixed one.
What counts as a clean load?
A clean load is one material only: all concrete, or all dirt, with no trash, wood, roots, plastic or other debris mixed in. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for special clean-fill pricing. Tell us the material when you book, and keep the dumpster covered so nobody tosses trash in.
Will a dumpster full of concrete crack my driveway?
Our drivers set wooden boards under the steel rails and rollers, which spreads the load across your driveway. Keep the dumpster off new concrete, thin pavers and spots that already have cracks. Never place a heavy-debris dumpster over a septic tank, sprinkler lines or soft lawn.
How small should I break up a slab before loading?
Break the slab into pieces you can lift or roll and lay flat. Flat pieces pack tighter, so more concrete fits below the halfway line. Large slabs stacked on edge leave gaps and can stick up above the fill line, which keeps the dumpster from being hauled.
