How to Load a Dumpster the Right Way

Load a dumpster from the front wall back, heavy and flat items first, and stop when the debris is level with the top rim. Heavy debris like concrete or dirt stops at halfway up the walls.

How do you load a dumpster?

Load a dumpster in six steps: plan the order, put heavy and flat items on the floor, spread weight evenly, break down bulky pieces, fill gaps with small debris, and finish level with the top rim. Concrete, dirt and brick stop at halfway up the walls in the 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster.

  1. Plan before the truck comes. Sort debris into heavy, bulky and loose piles. Pull out anything banned, like paint, batteries and chemicals.
  2. Start at the front wall. Lay heavy, flat items on the floor first: drywall sheets, doors, plywood and old cabinets.
  3. Spread the weight. Keep heavy debris low and across the whole floor. Don't pile it all at one end.
  4. Break down bulky items. Take legs off tables, cut up sofas and stack boards flat. Hollow shapes waste space.
  5. Fill the gaps. Pour bags, small scraps and yard waste into the spaces between larger pieces.
  6. Finish level with the rim. Nothing sticks up above the top edge. Lay mattresses and long items flat on top.

How full can you fill a dumpster?

Fill a dumpster no higher than level with the top rim. Texas law, Transportation Code chapter 725, requires loads of loose material to be contained so they don't spill or blow off. An overfilled dumpster can't be hauled on the highway as it is, so the driver can't take it.

The law sets the containment rule. Our policy is what happens next: the $125 trip fee applies, and you remove the excess before we come back. Confirm any local rules with your city or landfill.

Where should heavy items go in a dumpster?

Heavy items go on the floor of the dumpster, spread evenly from front to back. An even load lifts and rides safely on the truck. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in a 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster, and only halfway up the walls, to stay under highway weight limits.

Heavy debris reaches the included tons long before the bin looks full. The EPA conversion factors list dirt at about 929 lb per loose cubic yard and broken concrete at about 860 lb. See concrete and dirt dumpsters for sizing.

How do you fit more in a dumpster?

You fit more in a dumpster by breaking furniture down, stacking flat pieces and filling every gap. A sofa left whole takes up the space of several broken-down ones. Cut long boards and branches to the bin's width, and flatten boxes before they go in.

  • Remove legs, cushions and doors from furniture.
  • Stack drywall, plywood and doors flat, like a floor.
  • Roll carpet tight and tape it.
  • Bag loose trash so it fills corners.

Fitting more volume does not raise the weight limit. Check how dumpster weight is billed before a heavy job, since overage is $75 per ton by the exact pound.

Should you cover a dumpster when it rains?

Covering a dumpster during rain is a good idea, because wet debris weighs more than dry debris. Drywall, carpet, wood and cardboard all soak up water, and that water counts on the landfill scale. A tarp held down at the corners keeps most rain out between loading days.

Remove the tarp before pickup so the driver can check the load. West Texas storms can blow in fast, so tie the tarp well.

How do you keep neighbors from filling your dumpster?

Keep the dumpster where you can see it, cover it with a tarp when you're not loading, and finish the job quickly. Debris someone else adds still counts toward your included tons and could include banned items. You pay for the weight, so you control what goes in.

Placing the bin close to the house and away from the street helps. The driveway placement guide shows the space each size needs.

What happens if you overfill a dumpster?

An overfilled dumpster can't be hauled, so the $125 trip fee applies and you remove the excess before the driver returns. Debris must sit level with the top rim. Taking a few items off the top before pickup day costs nothing, so check the load the night before.

If the job needs more room, a swap is cleaner than stacking. Plan the right size from the start with the dumpster size guide, and check what can go in a dumpster before you load.

How to load a dumpster: more questions

Can I start loading the day the dumpster arrives?

You can load as soon as the driver sets the dumpster down and pulls away. Your 7 rental days start with delivery, so plan the delivery for the morning work begins. Have heavy items staged nearby so they go in first, at the bottom.

Is it safe to climb into the dumpster to pack it down?

We advise against climbing in. Loose boards, nails, broken glass and shifting debris make the inside of a dumpster a poor place to stand. Break items down on the ground instead, and use a rake or shovel from outside to level the load.

Can I leave extra debris next to the dumpster for pickup?

Only what is inside the dumpster goes on the truck. Debris piled beside it stays on your property. If you are running out of room, call for a swap: we haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, billed as a new rental.

Should bagged trash go in first or last?

Bagged trash goes in after the heavy, flat items, not before. Bags squash and fill the gaps between boards, furniture and drywall. Put them in first and they pad the floor, which wastes space under the heavy pieces. Save a few bags for the last corners.

What if the dumpster fills before my job is done?

Stop at the rim and call for a swap. The driver hauls the full dumpster and drops an empty one, and the swap is billed as a new rental. If you only need a few more days, not more room, an extra day is $25.
