What fits in a 15-yard dumpster?

A 15-yard dumpster fits about 6 pickup loads. That covers a packed two-car garage, a single-layer roof up to about 20 squares, or a deck tear-out. These are typical fits, not promises: packing and debris weight both change what goes in.

  • A two-car garage or attic cleanout
  • A single-layer shingle roof up to about 20 squares
  • A small deck or fence tear-out
  • Flooring and drywall from two or three rooms
  • Up to about 7.5 cubic yards of concrete, dirt or brick, loaded halfway

How fast does heavy debris use up the 15-yard's 2.5 tons?

Heavy debris uses up the 15-yard dumpster's 2.5 tons before it is half full. Dirt weighs about 929 lb per cubic yard, so a half-full load of 7.5 cubic yards weighs about 6,968 lb. That is 1,968 lb over the 5,000 included, or $73.80 at $75 per ton, billed by the pound.

Roofing is lighter by volume. At 240 lb per square, a 20-square single-layer roof weighs 4,800 lb and stays under the limit. A second layer doubles the weight, so a two-layer roof of 12 squares already reaches about 5,760 lb.

Weights: EPA Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, checked October 21, 2026. Shingle weight is an example; use the number on your bundles.

Will the 15-yard dumpster fit your driveway?

The 15-yard dumpster needs a flat spot 16 ft long and 7.5 ft wide. That is a little longer than a pickup truck and narrower than our other sizes. The roll-off truck backs in straight and tilts to set it down, so keep the approach and the space overhead clear. Wooden boards go under the rails.

The 4.5 ft walls are about chest height on most adults, so plan how you will lift heavy pieces over the side. Details are in the driveway placement guide.

Is the 15-yard too small or too big for your job?

The 15-yard is too big for a single bathroom or a small concrete patio, where a 10-yard does the same job. It is too small for a kitchen remodel or a whole-house cleanout, where the 20-yard adds about 2 pickup loads and half a ton. Use the table below to check.

15 yard dumpster rental questions

How many squares of shingles fit in a 15-yard dumpster?

About 20 squares of a single layer, if your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle with 3 bundles to a square. That is 240 lb per square, and 20 squares is 4,800 lb, just under the 2.5 included tons. Check the weight printed on your bundle wrapper and redo the math, because heavier shingles fill the weight limit sooner.

Is a 15-yard dumpster enough for a two-car garage?

A full two-car garage of boxes, furniture, tools and shelving usually fits the 15-yard dumpster, at about 6 pickup loads. Break down furniture and flatten boxes to fit more. A garage with an old fridge or freezer adds a $50 Freon item fee for each one.

Why is the 15-yard dumpster narrower than the others?

The 15-yard dumpster is 7.5 ft wide, compared with 8 ft for our other sizes. That extra half foot helps on tight driveways and next to fences or gates. It is 16 ft long, so it still needs a straight approach for the truck.

Can I mix concrete and household junk in a 15-yard?

You can put both in a 15-yard dumpster, but keep the load no higher than halfway once heavy debris is in it. Mixed loads do not get clean-fill pricing, and the concrete will use up the 2.5 included tons fast. Two separate loads often cost less than one mixed load.

When should I skip the 15-yard and get a 20-yard?

Skip to the 20-yard when the debris is light but bulky, like a whole-house cleanout or a kitchen remodel. It holds about 8 pickup loads and includes 3 tons. Keep the 15-yard for heavy debris, because the 20-yard does not take concrete or dirt.
