What size dumpster do I need for my remodel?

A 10-yard dumpster with 2 tons included fits most single bathroom remodels. A 20-yard dumpster with 3 tons fits most kitchen remodels. A whole-house remodel usually needs a 30-yard with 4 tons, and sometimes a swap. Heavy tile and mortar push a job up one size.

Starting points by room. Heavy tile, plaster or stone counters can move a job up one size.

How much does remodel debris weigh?

Drywall weighs about 467 lb per cubic yard and lumber or cabinet boxes about 169, by EPA conversion factors. Carpet weighs about 147 and carpet pad about 62. Tile and mortar beds are heavy too, but the EPA gives no figure for them, so treat a large tile tear-out like heavy debris.

Bathroom example in a 10-yard dumpster: 3 cubic yards of drywall × 467 lb = 1,401 lb. Add 2 cubic yards of vanity and framing × 169 lb = 338 lb. That is 1,739 lb, leaving about 2,261 lb of the 4,000 included for tile, the tub and the toilet.

Kitchen example in a 20-yard dumpster: 8 cubic yards of drywall × 467 lb = 3,736 lb. Add 8 cubic yards of cabinets and framing × 169 lb = 1,352 lb. The total is 5,088 lb, under the 6,000 lb included, with room left for counters and floor tile.

Whole-house example in a 30-yard: 15 cubic yards of drywall (7,005 lb) plus 15 of lumber (2,535 lb) is 9,540 lb. That is 1,540 lb over 8,000, or 0.77 tons. At $75 per ton, the overage is $57.75, billed by the exact pound from the scale ticket. See how dumpster weight is billed.

Where should a remodel dumpster go?

Put the remodel dumpster on the driveway, as close as you can to the door the crew carries debris through. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect the concrete. A shorter walk means fewer trips through the house and less dust on the floors you keep.

If parked cars or low wires block the drop, a $125 trip fee applies. The driveway placement guide shows the room the truck needs.

How should you load remodel debris?

Load tile, plaster and stone counters first, flat on the floor and spread out. Then add drywall, cabinets and trim on top, and fill gaps with small debris. Keep everything level with the top rim, because an overfilled dumpster can't be hauled under Texas law.

Break cabinet boxes and doors flat. Whole cabinets trap air and fill a dumpster fast.

Do lead paint and asbestos rules apply to my remodel?

Lead and asbestos rules can apply to older homes. The EPA lead rule, 40 CFR 745 Subpart E, requires paid renovators in pre-1978 homes to be certified and use lead-safe practices. The EPA asbestos rule, 40 CFR 61.145, requires inspection before renovating regulated buildings, such as commercial and larger apartment buildings.

Those are the laws. Our advice is separate: in a home built before the 1980s, test popcorn ceilings, old vinyl floor tile and old joint compound before demo. Keep suspect material out of the dumpster until a test clears it. Confirm with your city, HOA or landfill.

Wet paint, solvents and batteries never go in. The full list is on what you can put in a dumpster.

Can old kitchen appliances go in the remodel dumpster?

A stove, dishwasher or microwave can go in the remodel dumpster with no item fee. A refrigerator, freezer or wall AC unit costs $50, because its refrigerant has to be recovered first under EPA rule 40 CFR 82.155. Appliances add weight, so count them toward your included tons.

ApplianceEPA weight eachItem fee
Refrigerator250 lb$50
Stove150 lbnone
Dishwasher125 lbnone

Example: an old fridge, stove and dishwasher add 525 lb and one $50 fee. In a 20-yard with 6,000 lb included, that still leaves room for most kitchen debris.

How long can you keep a dumpster during a remodel?

Every rental includes 7 days, and you can keep the dumpster longer for $25 per extra day. Plan delivery for demo day, not the day you sign the contract. If the dumpster fills before demo is done, call for a swap, which is billed as a new rental.

Example: a kitchen remodel keeps a 20-yard for 14 days. That is 7 extra days × $25 = $175 on top of the quote. If demo finishes in 4 days, it can cost less to haul the first load and book a second dumpster for the final cleanup.

Remodel dumpster rental questions

How long should I keep a dumpster for a kitchen remodel?

Keep the dumpster through demolition and the messiest part of the install, then call for pickup. Every rental includes 7 days, and each extra day costs $25. If demo takes a weekend but the install takes a month, it is often cheaper to haul the first load and book a second one for final cleanup.

Will a bathroom remodel fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

A single bathroom gut usually fits a 10-yard dumpster with 2 tons included. That covers a vanity, toilet, tub or shower surround, drywall and a tile floor. A bath with tiled walls, a mortar-bed shower and a cast-iron tub can get heavy, so call and describe it before you book.

Can old cabinets and countertops go in the dumpster?

Cabinets, laminate countertops, sinks and faucets all go in. Break cabinet boxes down flat so they take less room. Stone and solid-surface counters are heavy for their size, so lay them flat on the floor of the dumpster and count them toward your weight.

Is old tile too heavy for a 20-yard dumpster?

Tile from one kitchen or bathroom floor goes in a 20-yard with the rest of the remodel debris. A whole house of tile, or thick mortar beds, adds up fast. EPA conversion factors give no weight for tile, so treat a large tile tear-out like heavy debris and load it low and spread out.

Can I put leftover paint from the remodel in the dumpster?

Wet or liquid paint cannot go in any dumpster we haul, along with solvents, strippers and other chemicals. Take liquid paint to household hazardous waste collection. Ask about fully dried, empty cans when you call so you know before you load them.

Do I need to test for lead paint before I remodel?

Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires paid contractors who disturb painted surfaces in those homes to be certified and work lead-safe. If you do the work yourself, the EPA recommends the same practices. Ask your contractor for their certification.
